Dance is a universal art form which draws on every area of performance. It draws its inspiration from painting, tells stories and expresses feelings and ideas.
France and Russia have a longstanding special relationship in the world of dance.
In the 18th century, French dancing masters were much sought- after abroad, and in Russia in particular.
Thus, most of the Saint Petersburg performances, including Sleeping Beauty, The Nutcracker, Swan Lake and many more were choreographed by Marius Petipa, a native of Marseilles.
When Sergei Diaghilev’s Ballet russes came to Paris in spring 1909, they revitalised the classical dance tradition by giving ballet a bright new gloss.
In order to perpetuate this relationship, it is essential to promote these ballets and the Saint Petersburg Ballet Theatre in particular as the worthy heir to this tradition. This is the goal which SPBT Europe has set itself.
“Dancing is the loftiest, the most moving, the most beautiful of the arts, because it is no mere abstraction from life; it is life itself.” Havelock Ellis
“The essence of all art is to have pleasure in giving pleasure.” M. Baryshnikov
